Starting today the mobile parking application ParkNOW! is available for download on the App Store. The application was built by Meme Research Labs LLC for leading mobile parking solution provider NOW! Innovations Ltd. The app allows one to pay for parking in Bethesda MD, Decatur GA, Hudson NY, and Silver Spring MD.

One of the highlights of the application is QR code scanning, which allows one to start parking in less than 10 seconds.

Announcing the Estonian VoteWatch

Meme Research Labs LLC and the non-profit Estonian Internet Community have teamed up to create an automated blog, which distills the happenings of the Estonian Parliament into easy-to-understand text and charts.

The blog is named Seaduste Ajaveeb (Blog of Legislation) and seeks to track which laws are passed, who is responsible for them, who voted for or against the law, and other important details.

Full source code is available on Github under the GPLv3 license.

Meme Research Labs LLC was founded in February 2010 by Elver Loho. MRL is one of the few companies in Estonia doing iOS software development. Our other strengths include Python (including Django) and developing and deploying scalable server-side software.

The company is located in Estonia, but routinely works with many software developers from around the world.

MRL’s founder Elver Loho was the co-founder of Estonia’s very first iOS software development company back in 2008 and has during his career overseen and taken part in the development of dozens of iOS applications. He is also the co-founder and board member of the non-profits Estonian Skeptics Society and Estonian Internet Community.

Three Short Videos for an Online Campaign

In a break from what we usually do around here, we decided to produce three short video clips for the non-profit Estonian Internet Community. The clips are in Estonian and are meant to raise people’s awareness of the problems surrounding the Estonian domain reform. Shot with Canon EOS 550D.

Producing, writing, lighting, and directing the clips was an interesting challenge and definitely gave us a ton of new and useful skills. This is something we are tempted to try again in the future.

Starring in all three videos was EIC member and professional actor Peeter Piiri.

We Built a Series of Trivia Games for Apptree Apps

The Quiz Duel series of games were built around the idea of playing them in a pub with a friend. So far the lineup includes separate apps for movie, basketball, music, and sports trivia with more to follow soon. All apps are free with an in-app option to buy more questions for $0.99.

The main challenge when developing these games was to create an efficient workflow for building and releasing more games in the same series. This includes: standardized graphics; build scripts to keep the same code base where possible, while still allowing game-specific code changes; custom tools to make the creation of new quiz packs as easy as possible.

Apptree Apps LLC is currently offering an iPad to a lucky user who decides to buy the full version of any of these games. They’re also looking for people to create new quiz packs.

Mobile Site for Parliament Member Silver Meikar

We built a mobile-optimized site for Estonian MP Silver Meikar, which aggregates and publishes content from his blog, twitter, and facebook. This will allow his voters to keep in touch with what he’s doing in the upcoming election season.

One of the biggest challenges in this project was integrating with the Facebook and Twitter APIs, including login via OAuth.

Software for Estonia’s Largest Online Bookstore

Estonia’s largest online bookstore Krisostomus, which until now had sold almost exclusively foreign books, asked MRL to develop the back-end software needed to begin selling all the books published in Estonia and integrate it with their existing webstore. We delivered.

Our solution was based around the OpenERP platform and mainly written in Python. One of the biggest challenges was integrating this software with a number of legacy systems, which had grown organically over the years to meet ever-changing demands.
